KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 13 — The Perikatan Nasional (PN) Opposition coalition will unveil its Shadow Cabinet next week, Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said today.
He indicated that it won’t resemble a traditional one as PN has a total of 74 MPs.
“But we will have major portfolios or clusters where some of them would be part of the group.
“For example, I might be joining defence, maybe even sports, and environment,” he said on the Breakfast Grille, a BFM radio talk show this morning.
The Bersatu Youth chief also explained why PN named Larut MP Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin as Opposition leader instead of its chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
Wan Ahmad Fayhsal said Hamzah was chosen because of his seniority and “gravitas”.
“Hamzah is an enigma by himself and if you talk about seniority, he is up there,” he said.
He also reassured that Muhyiddin is still PN’s leader and prime minister candidate.
Meanwhile, Wan Fayhsal also dispelled any rumours that they will initiate a 'Sheraton Move' sequel because PN’s priority is to keep the current unity government led by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in check.
He added that their goal is to be a responsible and dignified opposition that focuses on bringing the country’s economy back on track.
“While I’m the youngest in the team, some of the experience that we gained (when we were in government) back then shall be used wisely to keep the check and balance of the government we have today.
“I think we have a mixture of new and experienced MPs and it will be interesting,” said Wan Fayhsal.
PN won a total of 74 seats in the 15th general election (GE15), just eight seats away from Pakatan Harapan’s 82 seats, and both coalitions were short of the 112 seats needed to form a government with a simple majority.
The King then offered Muhyiddin a chance to form a unity government with PH but the former prime minister rejected it and chose to become the Opposition for the 15th Parliamentary Session.
