KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 13 — Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said that Perikatan Nasional (PN) expects the remaining state elections to be held around Hari Raya next year.
The Machang MP also added they are confident in defending Kedah, Terengganu, and Kelantan.
"For PN it has to be either before Raya or after Raya and I think we are going to have good results in Kedah, Terengganu, and Kelantan,” said the Machang MP in an interview with BFM's Breakfast Grille this morning.
When asked about the strategies and policies it would employ in states where the coalition is less popular, such as Selangor, Negri Sembilan, and Penang, he said the coalition would need to revise its controversial standing to attract more non-Malay voters.
"This is where I believe PN has to buck up in terms of policies and positioning, that we not only serve the Malay majority, but Malaysians at large.
"How the idea of PN’s on justice and fairness would be translated to votes? So it’s a big task for us to craft a good campaign,” said Wan Fayshal.
He also added that racial and religious rhetoric seen in its GE15 campaign (GE15) would have to change.
He, however, insisted that Malay-Muslim politics can’t be separated from religion and become secular because ethical issues are in the realm of religion.
During GE15 campaigning, PN and its component Islamic party PAS were singled out by the independent media monitoring initiative #KitaNampak for spreading inflammatory remarks that called on violence against certain ethnic groups.
As Perlis, Pahang, and Perak held their state elections concurrently with GE15, six remaining states including Selangor, Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Negri Sembilan, and Penang are required to call for their respective state elections by 2023.
States assemblies that are currently governed by PN include Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, and Perlis.
