KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 7 — Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil today disclosed that social media platform TikTok had blocked more than 1,000 videos it deemed extreme following the conclusion of the 15th general elections (GE15).

In a press conference this evening, Fahmi said a total of 1,126 videos deemed 'extremist' were blocked.

"We started with TikTok because we saw a lot of May 13 videos, for example. That was a serious cause for concern. We also reached out to Meta, because we would like to include WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook,” he said.

"I’d hate to think of TikTok as the wild, wild west. But when we look at the info...people are still using it to disseminate extremist content."

Fahmi said TikTok had blocked 130 videos and 857 clips prior to GE15 as well, adding that he wanted social media operators to be more responsible over the content allowed to be posted.

"I wouldn’t say operators can’t entirely wash their hands off it, but we would like to see how we can better regulate (the content),” he added.

Two days ago Fahmi spoke to TikTok representatives to hear their explanation over the videos.
