KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 26 — Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today expressed his appreciation to the voters who supported him in the recent 15th general election.
The Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) chairman thanked the 4,566 voters who cast their ballots for him for the Langkawi parliamentary constituency.
“I feel very honoured by your spirit, bravery and rejection of corruption shown by voting for me under Pejuang–Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA).
“Please believe that our small number does not mean that our struggle is over.
“In fact, because we stick to the principles of struggle, we are sometimes marginalised,” said Dr Mahathir said in a statement posted on his official Twitter account.
Dr Mahathir said he hoped the voters who supported GTA were not saddened by the GE15 results and would continue the coalition’s struggle for the nation, religion and also homeland.
Dr Mahathir failed to defend his Langkawi seat in the November 19 national polls, obtaining only 4,566 votes against Perikatan Nasional challenger Suhaimi Abdullah who secured 25,463 votes. But the 97-year-old Kedahan was not the only one from Pejuang or GTA who lost the race and the election deposit of RM10,000 per parliamentary seat.
A total of 369 Pejuang–GTA candidates lost their deposits.
