KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 20 — With the race to form the next federal government less than 24 hours to go, a Perikatan Nasional (PN) component party today asserted the coalition has the necessary simple majority without the inclusion of Pakatan Harapan.
Sabah Progressive Party president Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee made the assertion when met at PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's Bukit Damansara residence here.
He was quoted as saying by Malaysian Gazette as he was departing the residence around 4.48pm.
SPP is part of the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition.
The 15th general election ended yesterday with both the Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalitions claiming to have enough numbers in the 222-seat Parliament to form government.
PH currently has 82 seats while PN have 73. The Barisan Nasional coalition, which had pushed for national polls to be held this year ahead of the GE14 expiry next year, only garnered 30 seats.
A simple majority of 112 seats are needed to form the federal government.
With Malaysia’s Parliament hung, the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong today ordered coalition and party leaders to notify Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun of their numbers to form a new government by 2pm tomorrow.
