PERLIS, Nov 20 — Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said Umno’s supreme council should ask party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to step down after leading the party and Barisan Nasional into a disastrous 15th general election.
He said Umno has clearly lost and Zahid should allow Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to take over leadership of the party.
“When Datuk Seri Najib Razak lost in 2018, Najib stepped down, so he should do the same now,” Shahidan said during a press conference after the results of GE15.
Zahid dropped Shahidan from defending Arau in GE15, causing the latter to contest as a PAS candidate and win with a resounding majority of over 30,000 votes.
Despite calling for Zahid to step down, Shahidan said PN and BN should partner to form the next federal government.
Aside from federal seats, PN swept 14 of the 15 state seats in Perlis, causing BN to lose the state for the first time in its history.
