SHAH ALAM, Nov 10 — Several candidates in Selangor contesting in the 15th general election (GE15) have postponed their campaigning to visit flood victims in Meru, Klang, Kapar and Shah Alam.
Smart Selangor Operation Centre said as of 9pm three temporary flood relief centres (PPS) were opened including at Sekolah Kebangsaan Johan Setia, Klang where 147 flash flood victims are taking shelter.
However, it said data on the number of victims evacuated at the other two PPS, namely Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Binjai in Meru and Kampung Budiman public hall near here were being collected.
Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari who is also Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate for the Gombak parliamentary seat and Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate for the Kapar parliamentary seat Dr Halimah Ali have cancelled their campaign activities to check on the flood situation in the affected areas.
The Gombak election secretariat for the PH candidate said Amirudin cancelled his campaign event after Isyak prayer tonight to visit the flood-hit areas and coordinate efforts to expedite the distribution of aid to the victims.
Meanwhile, a representative of the Kapar PN candidate said Dr Halimah’s campaigning tonight had been postponed so that she could visit flood victims in Meru.
Caretaker health minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who is also the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate contesting the Sungai Buloh seat, posted on his Twitter his visit to flood-hit Taman Setia Warisan near here.
Meanwhile, candidates in the Kota Raja parliamentary seat, namely Mohamad Sabu (PH-Amanah) and D. Kajendran (BN-MIC) also went to the ground to visit flood victims at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Johan Setia PPS and Taman Desawan respectively. — Bernama
