KOTA KINABALU, Nov 5 — Police launched tear gas canisters to disperse an emotional crowd in Sabah’s interior district of Tenom that turned unruly this afternoon amid discontent over an election candidate.

Anti-riot police were called in to quell large groups of people carrying the Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM) flag.

Videos of the chaotic scenes have since been posted on social media, where they are quickly and widely being shared.

It is believed that the crowd got restless and emotional when the returning officer did not announce the candidates after noon.

A Parti KDM source told Malay Mail that PKDM president Datuk Peter Anthony’s nomination papers were not approved by the returning officer due to his court record.

Malay Mail understands Peter’s lawyers are at the nomination centre to sort out the matter.
