KUCHING, Nov 3 — Caretaker deputy minister of plantation industries and commodities Datuk Willie Mongin, who left Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) to join Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) early this year, expressed his gratitude to Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) leaders for nominating him to defend his Puncak Borneo seat in the 15th general election (GE15).
He said he came to know that he was picked to defend his seat only yesterday evening.
“Now that I am selected, I promise to work very hard and continue to serve the people; basically, to look after their well-being and other aspects,” he told reporters after receiving his credential letter from GPS chairman Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg to use the coalition’s logo in GE15.
He said he will work harder for the people of Puncak Borneo if he manages to retain the seat to reciprocate the faith that the GPS leaders have in him.
“We have to work together to ensure that we can deliver Puncak Borneo for GPS in this election,” he added.
He said his track record in Puncak Borneo since he was elected in 2018 is there for all to see.
Asked to respond on the favourable feedback from the ground, he said there is no such thing as an easy win.
“We have to work hard, double our efforts. We have to be sincere to the people and we have to do everything so that we can give the confidence to the people,” he said.
He said, however, that he is confident that many who voted for him when he stood for election on a PKR ticket in 2018 are still behind him.
“I do hope that they will look at the bigger picture because we need more representatives from GPS so that they can have a stronger voice in Parliament,” he said.
Willie left PKR in 2020 and later joined Bersatu. Earlier this year, he quit Bersatu to join PBB.
