KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 30 — Malaysian United Democratic Alliance’s (Muda) candidate for Kepala Batas Muhammad Danial Abdul Majeed claimed on Twitter today that his political views have changed from when he once openly professed support for Barisan Nasional.
Commenting on such tweets from as far back as 2013 and as recently as 2018 that were dug up from his Twitter feed, he claimed that until the Sheraton Move of 2020, he was “clouded by the politics of race and religion”.
He acknowledged tweets in which he defended then prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s financial aid schemes and accused DAP of intending to destroy Islam and the Malays.
“I cannot avoid my political identity in 2013,” he wrote when accepting the tweets as his own, before insisting he no longer subscribed to such views.
“Muda brings a wave that lifts everyone across all religions, race, skin colour, ages, and backgrounds. I believe this is what we need to bring. Politics of values, policies, and services. At least, this is what I want to bring from myself to the country.
“I want more people to be inspired to change. The past is not an obstacle to change to a more progressive political identity. There’s nothing wrong with that and there’s no need to be afraid,” he tweeted.
Danial’s old tweets have led to users on Twitter questioning his sincerity towards Muda’s agenda and the wisdom of the PH partner in fielding him as candidate for the 15th general election.
Yesterday, Muda named Danial as one of three parliamentary candidates that also included Siti Rahayu Baharin and Lim Wei Jiet in Tanjong Karang in Selangor and Tanjung Piai in Johor, respectively.
Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said he will be making an announcement on whether he will defend his Muar parliamentary seat on Wednesday.
The Election Commission has fixed November 19 as polling day, November 5 for nominations while early voting will take place on November 15.
