KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 — Incumbent Klang MP Charles Santiago urged his supporters to back the DAP candidate that will replace him, after the party announced he was not chosen to defend the seat in the 15th general election.
In a statement thanking supporters for their trust since he first won the seat in 2008, Charles said he was grateful that they had been part of his political journey.
However, the activist turned politician said the goal of a clean and fair government remained elusive, and that further effort was needed to realise the objective.
“I know many of you are upset that I am not fielded again but I know we are better than the anger,” he said.
“We are at a crucial time, where each of our vote counts. And therefore, I humbly request that you cast your vote for a Pakatan Harapan government.”
He also wished his replacement, V. Ganabatirau, luck in the latter’s contest, before saying he would continue to speak out against Umno and other corrupt elements in the country.
Earlier tonight, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke announced Ganabatirau as the party’s candidate for Klang, replacing the three-term incumbent Charles.
Prior to the announcement, rumours that Charles would be dropped had already been spreading, prompting some non-governmental groups and supporters to launch a campaign advocating for him to be retained.
