MELAKA, Oct 26 — Residents in Melaka will have the opportunity to witness the total lunar eclipse in the state which is expected to happen on November 8, says Melaka mufti, Datuk Abdul Halim Tawil.

He said the phenomenon was expected to occur for over three hours from 6.51 in the evening until 9.56pm and it could be seen by using a telescope, made available at Masjid Cina Melaka, the main location to witness the eclipse.

He said in appreciating and understanding this unique phenomenon, the state government through the Melaka Mufti Department and Melaka Islamic Religious Council, would be having a total lunar eclipse observation ceremony at Masjid Cina Melaka in Krubong on the date mentioned.

“A variety of events will be held on that day such as the ‘khusuf’ (eclipse) sunat prayer and sermon on total lunar eclipse at all mosques in the state including Masjid Cina Melaka.

“Masjid Cina Melaka has been chosen as a strategic location to observe the eclipse, which seldom occurs,” he told reporters, here, today.

He said that about 800 to 1,000 people were expected to attend the event which would be graced by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Melaka, Tun Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam.

“At this event, the public can witness for themselves the phenomenon beginning with the partial lunar eclipse phase to the full eclipse when the earth is between the moon and sun in one line.

“The total lunar eclipse phenomenon proves the greatness of Allah as we will also be seeing the moon turning reddish,” he added. — Bernama
