KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 19 — Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) election director Amira Aisya today revealed that Pakatan Harapan (PH) has yet to start negotiations for the 15th general election (GE15) with her party, adding that the move must begin soon.
She said in a statement that Muda will respect incumbency in the seat negotiation, but that they must be distributed fairly and equitably.
"The focus of this election is to provide the people with the best choice in fighting against the Umno-Barisan Nasional (BN) government.
"We must prioritise the candidates with the best right to authority so that the people need not choose between the lesser of two evils,” the Muda deputy president said.
She also revealed that the youth-led party had agreed to the three terms set by PH as conditions for joining it: agreement with the PH presidential council’s choice for prime minister, to ensure that negotiations will not disturb incumbent seats, and to receive permission from PH before discussions with other parties or coalitions.
"The idea is for the Opposition to move as one within a single coalition, to avoid overlapping fights over seats and to focus on GE15 together,” she said.
She added that it was viewed as necessary by her party to return the country’s honour into the hands of the people.
On Tuesday last week, PH chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that there was progress in discussions between PH and Muda regarding cooperation.
In response, Muda said it welcomes PH’s offer to form an electoral pact for the GE15, as the collaboration would be natural given the shared values and multiculturalism in both entities.
Muda officially began talks with PH to join the coalition last month, and its inclusion, if accepted, would make it the coalition’s fifth component party.
However, Muda had also faced fierce opposition from PH component PKR and its Youth wing over its application.
Muda currently holds one federal seat in Muar, and one Johor state seat in Puteri Wangsa.
