JOHOR BARU, Oct 17 — Muar Umno Youth has dismissed allegations that it was involved in disrupting a Malaysian United Democratic Alliance’s (Muda) ceramah or political rally in Muar last night.

Malaysiakini reported its chief Helmy Abdul Latif saying the wing rejects all forms of provocation in politics.

"Whether [the rowdy group] was paid or not, this is an unhealthy practice in politics,” Helmy was quoted saying.

The denial comes after it was reported that Muda president Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman’s team accused Umno of being behind the group of 20 rowdy youths that attempted to disrupt his speech.

The incident started shortly after Syed Saddiq took to the stage to deliver his speech.

In the middle of his speech, a group of youths started being provocative by chanting penipu, or Malay for "liar", followed with an attempt to create a scene in the area.

Muda volunteers and police then moved in to chase off the provocateurs, but added that the group returned later and continued to make a scene on the road leading to the event area.

Despite the provocation, Syed Saddiq, who is incumbent Muar MP, continued his speech.

He also addressed the rabble-rousers and said they should play a role in upholding the country’s dignity instead of carrying out provocations.

Earlier, Muda deputy president Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz said the party will file a police report over the incident, which he said was caused by an "organised mob”.

"Those who reject dirty politics must make a police report and share the viral pictures and videos of the incident.

"Don’t make the excuse that you don’t recognise who did it. We have proof,” Amira said.
