KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 — Tawfik Ismail, the eldest son of respected former deputy prime minister Tun Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman, has expressed his intention to contest against Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in the 15th general election.
Tawfik said he will be among the line up of Gerak Independent (GI) candidates and intends to face off against Zahid in Bagan Datuk, Perak, The Star reported today.
“I will contest against him in Bagan Datuk or anywhere he runs,” he was quoted as saying.
Tawfik said Zahid embodied all that is rotten in the system.
He also called on all Malaysians who hate corruption to see his struggle as theirs as well.
“I will call on all Malaysians who hate corruption to see my fight as their fight.
“I am not splitting Pakatan Harapan votes but instead taking my fight to the Malay heartland,” Tawfik added. The GI group was first reported in October last year. The movement is said to be a collaboration of several non-governmental organisations like Malaysian Action for Justice, Unity Foundation, I Am The Third Force, KitaBantuKita, and Malaysia First.
GI had said it intends to “deliver” independent MPs to protect and preserve the rights enshrined in the Federal Constitution, and promises to bring about progressive initiatives for the good of the country.
