KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 — PAS finally announced its decision today, opting to stay with its Bersatu partner in the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition for the 15th general election instead of Umno.
The Islamist party's president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said its decision was based on the principle of unifying the ummah.
He said the party has also decided that the three state governments under its control will not dissolve their legislatures to enable simultaneous state and national polls.
“The PAS central working committee held today has also finalised state seats with PN and the list from the states will be brought for evaluation to the Syura Ulama Council.
“PAS also maintains its position against dissolving the state legislative assemblies in Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah,” he said in a statement.
PAS had been actively courting Umno in the run-up to the dissolution of Parliament on October 10 and even the few days after, also citing the need to unify the ummah.
Yesterday, PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said Umno's rejection to work with PAS in GE15 will clear the path for a stronger working relationship with the coalition.
Muhyiddin also said that this meant PAS would remain a key component of PN as a founding member of the coalition.
