KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 20 — Malaysia recorded a jump of more than 500 new Covid-19 cases today, logging 3,764 new cases as compared to yesterday’s 3,229.
Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said this brings the total number of cases recorded in the country to 2,820,927.
“Of today’s 3,764 cases, 522 cases were imported into the country from overseas, involving 426 Malaysians and 96 foreigners.
“The remaining 3,242 cases were all transmitted locally, involving 3,089 or 95.3 per cent locals, and 153 foreigners,” he said.
Dr Noor Hisham said that there are currently 160 patients being treated in intensive care units (ICU) nationwide, with 125 positive for Covid-19 and 35 either suspected, probable or under investigation for Covid-19.
Of those in ICUs, 72 patients required ventilators, said Dr Noor Hisham, adding that 55 of them have confirmed to be Covid-19 positive, while the remaining 17 are suspected, probable or under investigation for the deadly disease.
He added that 17 new Covid-19 clusters were detected in the country over the past 24 hours, bringing the number of active clusters to 214.
Malaysia’s national infectivity rate was now 1.00, with Kuala Lumpur holding top spot for state or federal territory with the highest rate of infection, at 1.09.
This is followed by Negri Sembilan, Johor and Kedah, at 1.04 each, and Melaka, at 1.03.
Both Perlis and Labuan have a 0 infectivity rate.
