KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 30 — Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad rejected claims that corrupt former officials were offering payment for entry into his party.

Dr Mahathir, who is also the prime minister, responded so when asked if any members of the previous government had dangled compensation for PPBM in the hopes that their membership would shield them from possible prosecution.

“No, no, we have not made deals with criminals,” said Dr Mahathir during a press conference at the Anti-Corruption Summit 2018 in Hotel Istana this morning.

He added that to date, there have been no cases of corruption concerning those looking to join PPBM.

“Well, if you have found some cases of corruption, you are welcome to report and we will take action.

Dr Mahathir then explained those looking to join PPBM are required to leave their previous party and remain an independent for a period of time before applying for admission.

“It is not going to be easy. For example Datuk Mustapa was an independent, he became an independent for some time before his application was approved,” he said in reference to former Umno man Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.

Mustapa, also Jeli MP, quit Umno on September 18. He joined PPBM on Friday.
