KAJANG, April 14 ― Datuk Seri Najib Razak today announced the construction of a new complex dedicated to treating women and children at the Kajang Hospital here.

The Barisan Nasional chairman said the RM305 million project is to alleviate the patient congestion in the 129-year-old hospital.

“When I visited the hospital on 8th September, 2015, I saw the real condition of the hospital where the state of the building is dilapidated and it is constantly congested with patients.

“The hospital which was established in 1889 is due for a much-needed upgrade,” he said in his speech at the complex groundbreaking event.

Caretaker Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam who was also present, said the new hospital complex would provide a safer environment for their patients.

“Hospital Kajang is known to have a bed occupancy rate of 100 per cent. We sometimes even see patients in the corridor and even a woman's bed in the men's ward, which should not be the case,” the MIC president said.

Dr Subramaniam said the new complex comes with an additional 272 beds on top of the hospital’s existing 306 beds, significantly increasing Kajang Hospital’s ability to accommodate a total of 578 inpatients.

“The new complex also will help create a more comfortable environment for women, especially for new mothers,” he added.

The new eight-storey women and children complex costs RM304,538,000 and is built on 5.4 acres of land.

It will have six wards, six operating theatre and 14 delivery rooms. It will also have amenities and services such as radiology, laboratory, pharmacy and another eight-storey carpark block.

The new building is due to complete in 2021.
