RAWANG, Nov 29 — The Rawang Bypass, which features a 2.7km elevated bridge “that parts the skies” at 58.2m above ground, opens from 6am today.

The picturesque section is part of the 9km highway connecting Rawang and Serendah.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said at the launch yesterday the bypass was an engineering feat and signified the Public Works Department’s (JKR) ability and commitment towards complex projects without sacrificing the environment.

“The project used the Movable Scaffolding System (MSS) to preserve the ecosystem by preventing the use of excessive heavy machinery and felling of trees.

“Its elevation also makes it unique as it would seem like you are driving through clouds in the morning or after rainy weather. The stretch also offers a beautiful panoramic view of Rawang town,’’ he said.

Fadillah added the project at the Selangor Heritage Park only required about 9.7ha of land instead of 25ha if the bypass had been built without the elevated part.

The design of the bridge was also meant to protect the rare Merawan Kanching or Giam Kanching tree species at the park.

Fadillah said the bypass would reduce congestion and travel time between Rawang and Serendah, adding rush hour traffic in the town sometimes delayed road users by up to two hours.

“The bypass will benefit the people of Hulu Selangor, Selayang and Rawang by reducing traffic in the area,’’ he said.
