KOTA KINABALU, Sept 1 ― Sabah police have arrested two local men in connection to over 5kg of syabu, in the city centre here three days ago.

State narcotics department chief superintendent Mohamed Fadzil A. Rahman said that investigations from a string of drug cases recently led police to arrest a 31 year-old restaurant owner in Gaya street on Monday at about 5pm.

“We found him carrying a paper shopping bag with two boxes in it. Inside the boxes were altogether six packages of syabu weighing a total of 5,008g with a market value of RM600,000,” he said.

The arrest also led to a second arrest of his 35-year-old accomplice at a nearby shopping centre.

Also seized was a Perodua Axia and a ring and gold chain belonging to the first suspect.

“The drugs were believed to be for distribution in the local market, but we are still investigating how the drugs came into the state, and whether they are working with a bigger syndicate,” said Mohamed Fadzil.

The two suspects are under a seven day remand while police investigate the case under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking that carries a mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

This is the second biggest syabu bust this year after police just last month busted a drug syndicate for more than 6kg of syabu worth more than RM1 million. The raid at the Inanam bus terminal on August 12 saw five people including a woman arrested.

In the first four months of the year, Sabah police had arrested 264 drug pushers, which involved 172 cases between January and April 12.

Police also arrested 714 people and seized 4.1kgs of syabu as well as nearly 500gm of ganja during that period.
