KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 — The Maju Institute of Education Development (MIED), an MIC-owned entity, has spent RM15 million since 1994 to empower the education of the country’s Indian community.

Its chairman, Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, said each year the institute spent about RM600,000 to print 17,000 Primary School Achievement Test (UPSR) modules to be distributed to Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (SJK) Tamil (T) nationwide.

He said the module comprised five core UPSR subjects, namely Bahasa Malaysia (Comprehension), Written Bahasa Malaysia, Mathematics (Paper 1 and 2), English (Paper 1 and 2) and Tamil (Paper 1 and 2).

“These modules are given free to all students in six SJK (T) and due to this proactive measures their  performance in the UPSR examination has increased dramatically every year.

“Last year, at least 1,300 students obtained 7As in UPSR. This is a remarkable achievement,” he said adding that the Science and Mathematics modules were published in bilingual languages for easy reference in teaching and learning for both teachers and students.

Samy Vellu said this year MIED spent nearly RM0.5 million to print 17,038 copies of each module and 600 copies as a guide for teachers.

“Each module will be distributed to 523 SJK (T) nationwide and fully funded by MIED. Each student will receive a set consisting of five modules,” he said. — Bernama
