KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 — A total of 260 candidates have officially registered to contest for positions in the Umno elections.

Party election committee chairman Tan Sri Mohd Tajol Rosli Ghazali said the final list of candidates would be announced before October 7 pending further checks.

“We are still checking the backgrounds and finalising the candidates for bankruptcy cases, court cases and other breaches of election ethics,” he told a press conference yesterday.

Acting disciplinary board chairman Tan Sri Megat Naj-muddin Megat Khas, who was present, said candidates were not allowed to hold campaigns to introduce themselves.

“We have drafted a schedule for a road tour to introduce candidates starting from October 1,” Megat Najmuddin said.

“Candidates are required to participate in the road tour which will be organised by the respective state Umno.”

The 260 aspirants include six who will vie for the three vice-president’s posts, 64 for supreme council seats, three for Wanita Umno chief, three for Wanita vice-chief, 44 for wanita exco, five for Youth chief, four for deputy, 77 for Youth exco, two for Puteri chief, three vice-chief and 30 for exco.

Wanita Umno chief information Datuk Hamidah Osman had opted out from contesting the movement’s deputy chief post and will going for a supreme council post instead.
