KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 3 — In a significant boost to Malaysia’s growing electric vehicle (EV) landscape, a leading provider of automotive intelligence solutions Autel Intelligent Technology Corp is expanding its footprint in the country with innovative smart electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions.

Founded in 2004, Autel now has a global presence in 79 countries and regions, specialising in automotive technology systems, smart charging systems, and electronic components.

Just recently at tech show CES 2025 in Las Vegas, Autel caught the attention of all those who attended with the debut of a new product—MaxiCharger DH480 All-in-One Charger, delivering a maximum output of 480kW and is capable of charging up to four vehicles simultaneously.

This cutting-edge EV charging solution combines high performance, user-centric design, and advanced technology, once again raising the bar in EV charging for drivers and businesses alike.

The company’s Asia Pacific CEO Henry He expressed optimism about Malaysia’s EV market, noting substantial potential since the company’s entry three years ago.

This growth aligns with the worldwide surge in EV sales, which saw a 25 per cent increase year-over-year in the first quarter of 2024, reflecting a global shift towards electrification and the critical need for robust and scalable charging infrastructure.

Similarly in Malaysia, EV continues to show strong growth in the market with over 21,000 registered electric vehicles throughout 2024, based on the latest official data.

The data also shows a 63.8 per cent year-on-year growth compared to 2023.

When asked about his views on Malaysia’s new energy vehicle industry and its infrastructure development, He said: “In recent years, Malaysia has significantly increased its support for the Electric Vehicle (EV) industry, particularly at the policy level.

“The government has implemented various incentives to promote green mobility and reduce carbon emissions, laying a solid foundation for the adoption and widespread use of EV. With growing environmental awareness among consumers and gradual shifts in the automotive market, the demand for EV in Malaysia is steadily rising.”

Autel has partnered with many CPOs (Charging Point Operators) to implement charging solutions with higher power and faster charging speed to meet the growing demand.

For example, with the trust and support of CPO DC Handal Green Mobility, Autel successfully deployed two MaxiCharger DC HiPower ultra-fast chargers at Johor Premium Outlets in southern Peninsular Malaysia.

This deployment includes one 640kW DC charger and one 400kW DC charger. These chargers significantly enhance the efficiency of EV charging, providing users with a more convenient charging experience.

“We firmly believe that, with collective efforts from all stakeholders, Malaysia’s EV market will achieve greater development. As fuel vehicles are being less adopted, the living environment will improve, with noticeable advancements in air quality and overall sustainability,” He added.

Autel is responding to this demand with four scenario-based, intelligent charging network solutions focused on destination, residential, fleet, and on-the-go charging solutions.

“Our goal is to efficiently link solar, storage, charger, and cloud to offer an integrated energy ecosystem for the end users,” said He, highlighting the company’s commitment to creating a comprehensive energy solution.

According to him, the company’s home EV charging solution is designed to be more than just a plug-and-play device.

“It integrates multiple technologies to enhance safety and efficiency with features such as a backend system that allows users to monitor charging status and generate historical usage reports,” he said.

In addition, he said the system supports integration with solar panels and energy management systems, enabling households to save on electricity bills.

“With our technology, users can dynamically adjust charging power based on household electricity consumption, preventing power trips during peak usage,” he said.

He was also asked about the uniqueness of the Malaysian new energy vehicle charging facility market, in comparison with other Asian markets, such as in consumption preference, customer base and key selling points?

When it comes to consumer preferences, he said, “Although fuel prices in Malaysia are relatively low and traditional fuel vehicles remain dominant, an increasing number of consumers are opting for electric vehicles.

“This trend is driven not only by cost savings on fuel but also by the futuristic designs, advanced functionalities, and eco-friendly appeal of electric vehicles.

“For many buyers, modern aesthetics, innovation, and environmental benefits are the key factors influencing their purchasing decisions, with cost savings being a secondary consideration.”

The customer base in Malaysia’s EV market is becoming increasingly diverse. In addition to individual consumers, more corporate fleets are transitioning to electric vehicles.

“For instance, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and POS Malaysia have been continuously expanding their EV fleets in recent years and plan to further increase the number of vehicles this year. Both fleets are using Autel charging solutions.

“Specifically, TNB’s charging stations are equipped with an automatic vehicle MAC ID recognition feature, allowing vehicles to charge without requiring a mobile app or RFID card for verification, effectively preventing unauthorised usage.

“Pos Malaysia’s charging stations include dynamic load balancing functionality. When demand is low, each vehicle charges at maximum power. If the number of vehicles exceeds the station’s capacity, the system automatically adjusts and distributes charging power evenly, ensuring efficient charging while preventing electrical system failures and ensuring stable operation.”

He explained that when selecting chargers, Malaysian consumers and corporate clients prioritise reliability, convenience, and smart features.

“Intelligent chargers capable of fast charging and precise monitoring are in high demand. As EV becomes more prevalent, consumers are increasingly concerned about the coverage and density of charging facilities, especially in public areas and residential neighborhoods.”

The Autel Charge App, a significant reason for choosing Autel DC and AC chargers, provides remote monitoring capabilities. If a system fault occurs during charging, the app immediately notifies both the vehicle owner and the CPO.

Additionally, Autel chargers are equipped with 23 safety checks to ensure charging safety, enhancing user confidence in the charging process. Efficient monitoring and robust safety systems are key factors that set Autel chargers apart in the market.

Autel has also established a robust distribution network in Malaysia, already serving over 3,000 household users with its smart charging systems.

The company plans to introduce next-generation home charging and fast-charging solutions in Malaysia soon.

“We also see Malaysia as a potential technology hub where we can source engineers for future market expansion,” He added.

This expansion underscores Autel’s strategic focus on Malaysia as a key market for its future growth, promising to accelerate the adoption of EVs and enhance the region’s charging infrastructure.

Apart from product sales, what are Autel’s plans in the future in Malaysia?

“Currently, Autel has no plans to establish production facilities in Malaysia. However, the company has set up a charging solutions department in Malaysia focused on researching the local charging ecosystem.

“This department’s primary role is to analyse and understand the Malaysian market and user needs, developing charging solutions tailored to local demands and addressing challenges faced by charging users and CPOs.”

Through this strategic setup, Autel aims to better adapt to market changes, improve the quality of charging services, and establish close collaborations with local automakers and related businesses to promote the development of Malaysia’s EV industry.

In the future, as market demand grows, Autel will also consider the possibility of exploring partnerships with local automotive brands to drive the widespread adoption of EV and charging infrastructure.
