KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 — A Chinese Crested dog, rescued from being euthanised, has been judged the world’s ugliest dog.

Seven-year-old Scooter won the judges hearts with its shock-headed, mohawk-like hair and tongue hanging loose from his mouth.

His hind legs are also reversed while his wee and grey tail is wispy, the New York Times reported.

One of the judges in the competition, Catherine Liang said Scooter reminded her of a hairy hippopotamus.

Judges said it was Scooter’s ability to take care of himself that endeared them to Scooter.

According to its biography, Scooter was brought by a breeder to animal control in Arizona to be put down but was adopted by Linda Elmquist.

Elmquist said it was a love at first sight for Scooter and decided to adopt him as she felt she could help him.

To help him walk, Scooter, who got US$1,500 (RM7,026) and a trophy for winning the title, now uses a wheel cart but he can balance and walk with just his two front feet.
