KUALA LUMPUR, April 17 — A family in Oregon, US is appealing to motorists who picked up money thrown by a relative on a highway recently, to return it as they need it.
Colin Davis McCarthy, had withdrawn US$200,000 (RM883,700) from the bank in US$100 (RM441) denominations before throwing it from the window of his car, leading to chaotic traffic.
Oregon State Police (OSP) said McCarthy performed the stunt at about 7.23pm on April 11 and when questioned, the 38-year-old said he was doing well and wanted to share the money with others, KEZI 9, an ABC affiliate, reported.
It is unclear what McCarthy’s occupation was.
It took less than 30 minutes for motorists to retrieve the money thrown by McCarthy as police failed to locate any cash on the highway.
OSP Lieutenant Jim Andrews said police tried looking for money that was left behind but failed to find any.
“They were unsuccessful at locating any, so the people that originally stopped on scene did a pretty good job of cleaning it all up,” he said.
An unidentified relative told police that McCarthy got the money by withdrawing from his family’s shared accounts, leaving them penniless.
Despite endangering motorists, police will not be charging McCarthy.
