KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1 — Social media users are calling out the finalists of Miss Korea 2022 for looking too similar to one another.
This was after the winner was announced during the 66th annual beauty pageant which took place in Seoul, South Korea on October 26.
This year’s Miss Korea crown was won by 23-year-old Lee Seung Hyeon, an economics student at Korea University. Lee introduced herself as a trendsetter and said her dream was to become CEO of a global fashion brand, AllKpop reported.
First runner-up was 25-year-old aviation student, Yoo Si Eun while second runner-up went to 22-year-old engineering student, Kim Go Eun.
On South Korean online platform Naver, social media users were seen expressing their frustration in the comments section.
Most of the comments targeted the women's appearance, with many saying the finalists all look too similar to one another, allegedly due to plastic surgery.
One user commented that the finalists look like "virtual AI humans" while another jokingly asked whether the three finalists went to the same doctor.
According to Business Insider, South Korea has the highest rate of plastic surgeries per capita in the world, with the most popular treatments being skin whitening, nose jobs and double eye-lid surgery.
This is not the first time Miss Korea finalists have been criticised. Almost every year, finalists of the competition have received online harassment, portal Sportsskeeda reported.
On Twitter, some users blamed beauty pageant fans for setting unrealistic beauty standards.
According to the organiser Global E&B, they are proud of the beauty pageant’s history and said that this year’s pageant has seen radical and trendy changes.
