PARIS, Nov 26 — A restaurant guide that pitches itself as an alternative to Michelin has crowned Porte 12 in Paris, a restaurant newly opened by one of Singapore’s most influential chefs, Andre Chiang, the best restaurant in France for 2015.
In the 2015 edition of Le Fooding, created as a younger, cooler, rebellious alternative to the Michelin system 14 years ago, Porte 12 in the city’s 10th arrondissement shares the proverbial title of “best table” with Miles, a restaurant in Bordeaux.
Winners gathered in Paris this week for a gala soiree.

Fans of the Taiwanese chef Chiang, whose Restaurant André in Singapore ranks sixth on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list, can get a taste of his culinary philosophy halfway around the world in Paris, where diners tuck into Asian-inflected dishes such as Japanese toro with a cucumber sorbet, samphire and seaweed, and flavourings such as charred bamboo, Earl Grey tea and chanterelle mushrooms.
Helming Chiang’s Paris outpost is one of his French protegés, chef Vincent Crepel.
Paris-bound visitors looking for less formal, younger and more adventurous addresses that may not make Michelin’s radar (which awards stars and standings based solely on food) may be interested in the following eateries given nods in the 2015 edition of Le Fooding:
