KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — When foodie friends tell you there's an awesome char siu wantan mee in their neighbourhood, you drive to Cheras to eat lunch with them.
It's the quieter part of Cheras, far from the hustle and bustle.
Since there were three of us, we shared a huge platter of roasted meats.
There were luscious fat pieces of char siu. These melted in the mouth and were also evenly charred.
The roast pork were chunky cuts topped with a crisp crackling, making it a pleasure to eat.
We also had the roast duck with a nice crispy skin and meat that is fragrant with spices. And roast chicken with a golden skin for the last selection.
There's a choice of rice or wantan mee to go with the roasted meats. My friend recommended the noodles.
Insider information was much appreciated as the noodles were thin with just the right springiness to make you want to eat more.
It's tossed in a savoury sweet dark sauce. Under your noodles, there's chunky lard crisps for you to slowly relish.
These springy strands are best eaten with their pickled green chillies that still retain a firm bite.
Do order a bowl of spicy sour mustard greens too. This may pair better with rice but it's still doable with noodles.
Here their version is a mellow one that dials back the tanginess and spiciness. It's the type where you can slowly relish the soft vegetables with odds and ends from the BBQ process. We scored a pork tendon too; good gelatinous texture.
They also have braised items like beancurd and eggs. The beancurd was good with a soft texture.
Your order also comes with a bowl of wholesome-tasting soup. Drink this up.
And to alleviate all that guilt, there was blanched choy sum too. What I liked was how the vegetables weren't fibrous; the stems were tender.
It was a meal that saw us rolling down the hill at the end of it all. Literally, as hills are aplenty in this area. It was a lump sum of RM113 shared among the three of us. With so much meat, it was pretty reasonable.
And the popular hiking destination Ah Pek Hill is in the vicinity if you feel like you need to burn off some calories... but maybe not right after you have just eaten?
