PETALING JAYA, July 5 — A favourite from my childhood days is the bak kwa sandwich.

I often associate bak kwa with Chinese New Year since it'll appear on the tray of goodies set out for us or guests to indulge.

Then I found a sneaky way to eat it throughout the whole year, since I can throw it between two slices of bread and make it into a sandwich snack.

It's weird how your boring sandwich can be transformed with that sweet and savoury flavour bomb.

We do try to make it a little healthier with sliced cucumber and tomatoes, but who are we kidding since the bak kwa is packed with loads of calories.

Trust me, you just don't want to eat a healthy version of bak kwa as it just doesn't taste good at all.

Usually I get my bak kwa sandwich fix from food stalls during the day so I was incredibly happy to find a food truck that serves this at night.

A friend had mentioned its existence long ago but since I don't live nearby, I only managed to try it one night when I was in the vicinity.

Parked just outside the busy Restoran Canton Poh Kei Kopitiam, you can buy this happy meal for RM4 and enjoy it on the go.

The food truck also sells the bak kwa (pork or chicken) and meat floss separately.

You can't really see them grilling the bread, since the cooking station is elevated but you can smell it from where you stand.

Either ask for your sandwich to be sealed in a plastic bag or placed in a plastic bag tied with just a raffia string.

The former is the way to preserve the sandwich for the next day as I saw one customer buying four sandwiches. I guess it'll make a quick breakfast or a school snack.

What I liked about this sandwich was how it wasn't crammed with tomato sauce or mayonnaise. There's just a smear of sauce which they sprinkled with pork floss.

You get the crunch from the sliced cucumbers, the sweet savoury taste from the bak kwa and just a little of the pork floss, paired with the toasted soft bun.

It was just the light dinner I wanted for that night. Nothing fancy but oh so satisfying!
