KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 — How far will you drive for curry mee?
I guess I am one of those mad "foodies" who only has their eye on the bowl of curry mee, rather than the distance clocked up by my car.
I had taken one look at the rich orange curry mee at Kampung Mama Restaurant and decided that it was what I wanted to eat one day.
Even though Kepong Ulu sounds far, it wasn't for me since the place is supported by highways. Bear in mind, I am the exception.
What I did notice was, the place is just in front of FRIM, hence it's perfect for a curry pick-me-up after a trek in the forest.
You find the restaurant in this tiny lane where there's just a block of two shoplots.
As the place is open throughout the day, I went off peak to get my curry mee fix.
On the menu, there's two types of curry mee. There's the kampung curry mee (RM8.90 for the small portion) and the curry chicken mee (RM10.90 for the small portion).
The difference between the two types is just the toppings. The kampung version has char siu and cockles, while the other one was just curry chicken and potatoes.
Since I wanted the ultimate curry mee to justify my drive there, I decided to ask for a special version with everything in it. This set me back RM12.90 for a small portion of curry mee.
The curry broth was worth the drive: Flavourful, not too spicy and just the right amount of santan.
The toppings I felt weren't the best but pretty decent though. What I really liked was the curry chicken as the meat was juicy and the potatoes were chunky and soft.
For the char siu, the slices were more fat rather than meat, and it wasn't charred enough to resemble BBQ meat. The cockles were quite small in size, hence you don't get that luscious juicy taste you're looking for to pair with your curry.
I reckon next time, I'll just stick to the curry chicken version.
I also added additional fried wantans (12 pieces for RM7.90). These were super crunchy although the meat filling is rather small. What I did was dunk them in the curry mee for that delicious trinity of crispy, creamy and spicy.
Add a tall plastic cup of rich tasting Hor Ka Sai (RM4.10) with its mocha flavours and it was a satisfying late lunch.
On the menu, while the curry mee is the bestseller, other tables were also ordering their nasi lemak with either fried chicken or curry chicken. There's also wantan mee, chicken chop with rice and breakfast fare like half boiled eggs, steamed or toasted bread with kaya and butter.
Give it a try if you're in the vicinity or if you're as mad as me, make it a fun exploratory drive to Kepong Ulu for your curry mee fix.
