KUALA LUMPUR, March 2 ― Defending champion and nine consecutive Super League title winners Johor Darul Ta’Zim (JDT) continued their impressive start to the 2023 season by scoring an emphatic 3-0 win over Kuala Lumpur (KL) City FC in a Super League match at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Cheras, last night.
The win was the Southern Tigers’ second on the trot since the start of the season last Saturday where they beat Terengganu FC 2-0 to lift the Charity Shield.
Despite playing at their opponent’s backyard, JDT were the early aggressors, launching attack after attack from the start of the match and by the sixth minute could have taken the lead through lethal striker Bergson Da Silva but KL City FC goalkeeper Kevin Ray Mendoza kept the Brazilian at bay.
JDT drew first blood when striker Romel Morales struck in the 41st minute before Endrick Dos Santos made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute while 2022 Super League season’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) Arif Aiman Mohd Hanapi completed KL City FC’s misery by striking in the 90th minute.
Meanwhile, at the Likas Stadium in Kota Kinabalu, host Sabah produced a splendid display of attacking football to beat Kelantan United FC 3-1 with the first goal coming from Darren Lok (21st minute) from the penalty spot after Daniel Sang Ting was fouled inside the box.
Five minutes later South Korean import Park Tae-Su added Sabah FC’s second goal while Telmo Ferreira Castanheira struck the third in the 46th minute.
Kelantan United’s consolation goal was scored by veteran Indra Putra Mahayuddin just before the referee blew his whistle to end the game.
In Alor Setar, Kedah Darul Aman FC edged Terengganu FC 1-0 through Mohd Fadzrul Danel Mohd Nizam’s 90th minute strike at the Darul Aman Stadium.
In the final fixture for last night, Penang and Negeri Sembilan shared the spoils in a 0-0 draw at the City Stadium in Penang. ― Bernama
