SINGAPORE, Dec 3 — Some 15 empty shipping containers at the Keppel Terminal fell into the sea on Thursday (Dec 1) afternoon as a result of strong winds during a squall or storm, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said yesterday.

MPA said that it was informed of the incident at about 3pm on Thursday.

There were no reported injuries and there were also "no immediate impact to (the) port operations”, it added.

Two patrol crafts were deployed to monitor and cordon off the affected area to facilitate the recovery work of the freight containers by PSA Corporation.

Its Port Operations Control Centre has also restricted all vessel movement in the vicinity of Keppel Terminal until all the containers are recovered.

In a photo that has been circulating on social media, a number of the cargo containers can be seen floating on the waters near Keppel Terminal.

In the background, several other containers can be seen toppled over on the wharf.

In a video uploaded on the Sg.incidents Instagram account, a patrol craft can be seen retrieving a container as another container bobs in the water.

On Thursday, the Meteorological Service Singapore warned of more thundery showers across the island in the first half of the month.

It said that short-duration moderate to heavy thundery showers are forecast over parts of Singapore in the afternoon on most days, occasionally extending into the evening. — TODAY
