KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 4 — Transport Minister Anthony Loke has announced steps to phase out natural gas for vehicles (NGV) and NGV-powered vehicles, starting from next year.

Loke said the government will no longer allow the registration of NGV-powered motor vehicles from July 1, 2025, as part of efforts to gradually discontinue the use of NGV nationwide, according to a report by Free Malaysia Today.

"This measure prioritises the safety of road users and the public,” he said, adding that only about 44,383 NGV vehicles remain on the road, representing just 0.2 per cent of the nation’s motor vehicles, excluding motorcycles.

Loke highlighted that many NGV vehicles are dual-fuel operated, with kits installed between 1995 and 2014, and noted that the NGV tanks of these vehicles are reaching the end of their service life, typically set at 15 years.

According to Loke, Petronas will also begin halting NGV sales in stages starting from the same date.

To support NGV vehicle owners during the transition, the minister announced a set of assistance programmes:

  • Taxi Drivers: NGV-powered taxi drivers registered with the Land Public Transport Agency before October 1 will be eligible for a one-off RM3,000 e-voucher redeemable through Petronas’s Setel mobile app.
  • Dual-fuel Vehicle Owners: Dual-fuel vehicle owners registered with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) before October 1 can have their NGV kits removed for free at designated workshops.
  • Pure NGV Vehicles: For owners of purely NGV-powered vehicles, the government will offer a one-time payment based on the vehicle’s current value as appraised independently. The vehicles must be registered with JPJ before October 1. Upon accepting the offer, the vehicles will be taken to authorised facilities for disposal and deregistration to prevent unsafe modifications.

Applications for these packages can be made via the programme’s website.
