With 340 children in custody, govt to establish two more Baitul Mahabbah shelters, says home minister despite backlash from activists

TANAH MERAH, Sept 4 — The government is opening two more Baitul Mahabbah (shelters) for children below the age of 10 whose parents are detained at Immigration depots.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the two new centres will be opened in Kedah and Johor.

"Currently, we have four Baitul Mahabbah centres: in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan; Papar, Sabah; Miri, Sarawak; and the most recent one at the Tanah Merah Immigration Detention Depot in Kelantan.

"Altogether, we have 340 children and their guardians housed in the four Baitul Mahabbah centres, and so far, we have deported 84 children,” he told a press conference after opening the Tanah Merah Baitul Mahabbah today.
