SIBU, Oct 24 — A university student lost RM13,180 after falling victim to an online part-time job scam.

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the victim was included into a WhatsApp Group called ‘Wealth Wise Events Y12’, which offered online part-time job.

"The suspect instructed the victim to make money transfer to the given bank accounts and was promised that his money would be returned to him along with a five per cent commission,” he said in a statement.

Zulkipli said after successfully completing the task and earning a commission of RM319.56, the victim was told to perform more tasks.

"On October 22, the victim made four money transfers into three local bank accounts totalling RM13,180 for the purpose of completing the tasks given and to obtain the promised commission,” he added.

Zulkipli said the victim was also informed that the commission would be credited into his account on the same day.

"However, until the report was made, the victim never received the commission,” he added.

Realising that he was duped, the victim lodged a police report on the same day on October 22.

Zulkipli said the case will be investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Meanwhile, Zulkipli advised the public not to be easily deceived and influenced by job offers through social media which promised lucrative returns.

He said people should made a detailed check with the relevant agency or company before applying or accepting any dubious job offer.
