KUCHING, Sept 16 — Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Ababg Johari Openg tonight expressed his hope that the federal unity government will continue to remain stable until the next general election.
He said Malaysians should not forget that the stability under the administration of the unity government is the result of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s wisdom in resolving the country’s political crisis.
"Therefore, let us not waste His Majesty’s hope but to continue with the unity among the people for a united and glorious Malaysia,” the premier said his speech at the Malaysia Day celebration.
"Only a strong federal government in an atmosphere of permanent political stability is able to focus on the needs of the whole country, especially the needs in Sarawak and Sabah,” he said.
He said the GPS government received a big mandate from the people in the last state election and has been able to plan and implement state economic development programmes with a clear and concrete basis.
Abang Johari said the state government will continue to provide support to the unity government and provide it with stability to administer sustainably.
"Although, Sarawak and Sabah have made some demands, especially under MA63, it does not mean Sarawak, Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia cannot cooperate and strengthen unity for the sake of Malaysia.
He said the establishment of the unity government is proof that difference is not an obstacle towards unity.
Abang Johari also expressed the state government’s gratitude to the federal administration on its readiness to return the rights of Sarawak and Sabah as stated under the Federal Constitution and the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
He said these rights have been eroded or surrendered over the years since the formation of Malaysia in 1963.
"It is the wishes of the people of Sarawak that these rights and the special privileges under the constitution and MA63 continue to be respected and implemented as what have been agreed to by the founding fathers in 1963,” he said.
