KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 24 — Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has officially confirmed that he and his wife’s bank accounts were frozen by authorities yesterday.

The secretary-general of Perikatan Nasional (PN) alleged the action to be politically motivated and enforcement agencies were being pressured by government figures to harass him and other Opposition figures.

"Mine and my wife’s bank accounts have been frozen since yesterday. I believe there is pressure on the authorities to do so from high-ranking officials in the government. This freezing of our accounts is a desperate attempt by the Anwar Ibrahim administration to pressure PN that is gaining the trust of the people,” Hamzah said in a statement on Facebook.

"The Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) are being used to maliciously act against me, in the same way as Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin whose four abuse charges were eventually dropped by the High Court.

"I believe further politically motivated measures will be taken against me and leaders from PN in the near future including police action for my criticism of DAP during the campaign trail for the state elections,” he added.

It was reported yesterday that Hamzah, who is a former home minister, and his family had their accounts frozen by the Inland Revenue Board.

The accounts are believed to have been frozen as part of an ongoing investigation by the MACC against Hamzah.
