In Johor, seven teens remanded two days for assault on 15-year-old boy

JOHOR BARU, Aug 15 — Seven male secondary school students, who are believed to be involved in the gang assault of a teenage boy last week, have been remanded for two days to assist police investigations.

The remand order, starting today, was issued by Magistrate R. Salini at the Magistrate's Court here today.

The school-going suspects were wanted for allegedly assaulting a 15-year-old boy in a recreation area in Taman Bistari Indah here at 3pm last Wednesday.

Earlier, the suspects, aged between 14 and 17, were brought by the police to the Magistrate's Court here to be remanded.

Meanwhile, Johor Baru South police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said the remand order application was in accordance with Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC).

"The case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting,” he said.

In the incident, the victim suffered severe head and body injuries after he was kicked, punched and stomped on by his attackers.

The incident was filmed and later uploaded on social media.

The victim lodged a police report at 4.09pm yesterday.

Shortly after the report, detectives from the Johor Baru South district police arrested all the suspects who were believed to be involved in the assault.

Police conducted six raids around the city here starting from 5.30pm until 9.34pm on the same day.

The motive for the incident is believed to stem from jealousy as one of the suspects was not satisfied with the victim's friendship with his girlfriend.
