PUTRAJAYA, July 14 — The new tariff for the Green Electricity Tariff (GET) is set at a rate of 21.8 sen/kWh effective August 1, the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change said today.
Its minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said the determination is based on the retail price benchmark of green electricity supply in neighbouring countries that offer the same product.
"Meanwhile, the existing GET premium rate of 3.7 sen/kWh is maintained until 31 July.
"With this ruling, the government hopes that consumers will have greater confidence in the GET programme. This is because the process of offering and operating this program is based on the principle of a green electricity generation and supply system.
"At the same time, GET subscription also provides added value in supporting the country's energy transition efforts through the development and increase of new renewable energy capacity in the country's electricity supplier,” he said at a press conference at his office, here, today.
He also said that the 30 per cent quota limit previously set for GET subscriptions will also be abolished.
"This means users can subscribe to GET for up to 100 per cent of their energy needs,” he said.
He said that the revenue generated from the implementation of the GET programme will be utilised to develop and expand the new capacity of Tenaga Berhad's electricity supply system across the nation as it will help strengthen Malaysia's overall energy infrastructure and accelerate the transition to a greener future.
He added that GET users will be exempted from the Imbalance Cost Pass Through charge because generation from Tenaga Berhad does not involve the use of fossil fuels.
"Considering that this new ruling will involve an increase to the existing GET premium tariff rate, existing users will be given until July 31, 2023 to reconfirm the subscription.
"Users who do not provide any notification will be automatically terminated," he said.
