KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 — MIC reportedly said it will contest the Selangor state election after being given the green light by Barisan Nasional (BN) Chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
However, Malaysiakini quoted Selangor MIC chief MB Raja saying that the party has still not been informed how many seats it would contest.
"What was told to us by the BN chairman is that he will inform our president there are seats for us, but we're not sure how many,” he was quoted saying after a Selangor BN meeting last night, referring to Zahid,
Raja reportedly said that BN components would finalise their own seat allocations within a week's time.
However, the position of BN's other component, MCA, is still unclear after Selangor MCA chief Ng Chok Sin reportedly evaded the press during the same event.
Selangor Umno chief Datuk Megat Zulkarnain Omardin was quoted saying the selection would be based on each candidate's winnability.
"We welcome all requests in BN's spirit. But that doesn't mean there will be no seat, one seat or more [seats]. This is subject to discussion.
"We must set our sights to win. So we'll go further from there, and there are no problems with that,” he reportedly said.
He added that the president of each component party would make the final call on seat decisions for the coalition.
"They can ask, but the decisions do not lie with me. The higher leadership will decide on this. That means the best answer will come from the top leaders,” he said.
In the 14th general election held in 2018, BN contested all 56 state seats — with Umno taking 35, MCA 14, MIC three, and then-component member Gerakan in four.
Only Umno won four seats from the total, while the other component parties were wiped out.
