KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he could still remember the lyrics to Umno’s "Bersatu, Bersetia, Berkhidmat” party song, after appearing at his first Umno general assembly since he was expelled in the 1990s.
Anwar told reporters his visit to the Umno annual general meeting was mainly to strengthen the camaraderie within the unity government.
"The important thing is to complete the task for the country, personal experience is important but it cannot overcome the interests of the people and the interests of the country.
"So, I am coming back because I use this platform of unity to strengthen the government and provide benefits to the people.
"I certainly felt comfortable and because I was used to the atmosphere including facing the Umno song,” he said as he left the Umno headquarters.
Anwar was seen singing the anthem when it was played, seemingly word for word, as he waved the Umno flag alongside the Malay-nationalist party’s top leadership on the main stage.
The prime minister’s presence at the Umno headquarters as the guest of honour was highly anticipated due to his history with the party that previously ostracised him but went on to support his formation of the federal government last year despite the enmity.
Also seen at the AGM were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Amanah president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, and DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke.
