KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor should understand and follow the Federal Constitution before making claims on ownership of Penang.
He said the Federal Constitution had been signed by the conference of rulers including the Sultan of Kedah then.
"When a leader in this country speaks, he has to always understand the Federal Constitution. He has to understand that, even when the agreement was signed hundreds or thousands of years ago. As a menteri besar, he is bound by the legislation.
"I'm speaking this based on the attorney-general's principles which is to respect the constitutional agreement approved and signed by all Malay rulers including the Sultan of Kedah,” he told reporters after launching Seminar Fikrah Siddiq Fadzil at the Dewan Bahasa Pustaka building here.
Yesterday, Muhammad Sanusi claimed that Penang is under the ownership of Kedah while Perak and Perlis are the only states that have a border with Kedah.
Muhammad Sanusi said he is waiting for confirmation from the Department of Survey and Mapping Malaysia if there is a determined basis for the confirmation of Kedah’s border with other states.
He made his claim after signing the land and maritime boundary agreement between Kedah and Perlis at Wisma Darul Aman.
The agreement involves 44.3 kilometres for land while 5.6 kilometres for maritime (sea) or equivalent to three nautical miles.
