JOHOR BARU, April 7 — The Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) said it was disturbed by the photos of a 22-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl who were allegedly recorded in the middle of an indecent act and images of them being escorted out of a police truck in remand clothing and handcuffs.

Muda human rights bureau director Dobby Chew called on the media to promptly remove any explicit images identifying the two.

Chew also urged the public to stop sharing any images of the two youths.

He said the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) must intervene immediately and take down such content as it may involve explicit images involving a minor.

At the same time, Chew said Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution and the Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani must answer for the conduct of the police force in the arrest, detention and publicity of the case.

"There must be clear rules and orders surrounding the treatment of minors and any violation by the arresting officer must be dealt with severely,” he said in a statement today.

Chew was responding to a Johor couple who were earlier put under police remand for two days starting today after a video purportedly showing the two engaged in a sex act was shared on social media.

He said Muda was concerned about media outlets who have reported the news without any regard for the welfare and rights of the persons involved, especially under the Child Act 2001.

Chew explained that the Child Act 2001 provides clear rules and regulations for the treatment of juvenile offenders.

"Section 83A(1) explicitly states that a child shall not be handcuffed unless it is an offence involving grave crimes or there was an attempt to resist or evade arrest.

"There are no indications that the two persons were in any way committing a grave offence nor resisting arrest,” he said, adding that it is highly unethical for the police to parade the couple in handcuffs and remand clothing where photos of them in such conditions were shared freely.

Earlier, the couple was brought by police to the Magistrates court here for their remand application.

Magistrate Noorfazlin Hamdan approved the remand order allowing police to further investigations under Section 377D of the Penal Code for gross indecency.

The couple was arrested after they were believed to be involved in a 23-second video recording where they were supposedly having sex inside a car.

The video clip was widely shared on social media since yesterday.
