KUALA LUMPUR, March 27 — Former Klang MP Charles Anthony Santiago has been appointed as the chairman of National Water Services Commission (SPAN) effective March 20.
His appointment will complete the lineup of SPAN commission members for the term of 2023 to 2025, SPAN said in a statement.
"I believe that this lineup is capable of directing SPAN to continue as an organisation that is progressive, proactive and respected in the regulation of water services in Peninsular Malaysia and in the federal territory of Labuan based on their experience according to their own relevant expertise,” said Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
He added that SPAN and its commission members will need to work synergistically with employees to ensure that water services are in line with strategic planning, strict regulation as well as enforcement of the Water Services Industry Act 2006.
He conveyed his thanks to the previous SPAN commission members for carrying out their duties with dedication.
Charles was replaced by V. Ganabatirau as DAP’s Klang candidate in the 15th general elections held in November last year.
Prior to the announcement of Charles’ replacement, rumours that he would be dropped had already been spreading, prompting some non-governmental groups and supporters to launch a campaign advocating for him to be retained.
He first won the Klang Parliamentary seat in 2008.
