KUALA LUMPUR, March 24 — Datuk Rohana Rozhan has returned US$10 million linked to the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) sovereign wealth fund to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
Malay daily Utusan Malaysia reported today a source as saying this happened last year after the MACC had completed its investigation.
The source, however, did not elaborate on how Rohana, a past girlfriend of former Goldman Sachs banker Tim Leissner, had returned the 1MDB-linked money, including unspecified assets, to the anti-graft agency.
"She (Rohana) has returned all the relevant money and assets to the MACC, which was then channelled to the government.
"The MACC investigation involving Rohana in relation to 1MDB funds is completed and nothing more is required in relation to the case,” said the source when contacted yesterday.
Earlier yesterday, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, in a written reply in Parliament, said that the Attorney General’s Chambers did not have the information on whether Rohana had returned the US$10 million to the government.
Her reply was in response to a question from Lim Lip Eng (Pakatan Harapan-Kepong) who had earlier asked the prime minister to state if Rohana had returned the money to the government.
He had also asked for details of the 1MDB-related assets that had been returned.
In April last year, it was reported that the MACC was investigating the case involving Rohana in connection with the money received from Leissner.
At the time, the MACC had frozen her bank accounts and assets as the commission was actively seeking to recover both money and assets from her.
On April 13, it was reported that Rohana had agreed to return the US$10 million given to her by Leissner.
Rohana’s link to the 1MDB funds started after she was accused of receiving US$10 million, which she is said to have used to purchase a house in London.
In the US trial of former Goldman Sachs banker Roger Ng, Leissner testified that he bought Rohana a US$10 million house in London after she threatened him over the 1MDB scandal.
