KUALA LUMPUR, March 16 — DAP’s Lim Guan Eng has called on Malaysians to seize the opportunity to immerse themselves fully in the country’s digital economy after the government recently said 5G costs may be lowered in the future.

Lim cited a parliamentary reply by Deputy Communications and Digital Minister Teo Nie Ching made on Monday, where the latter had said full development of the 5G network will allow 5G services to be offered at 13 sen per gigabyte compared to the current cost of 4G services of RM 1.68 per gigabyte.

"This is a marked reduction in cost saving for Malaysian consumers of 92 per cent that will make Malaysia 5G services the third cheapest in Asean.

"Malaysians should seize the opportunity to immerse fully in the digital economy, particularly when the government has also deferred the implementation of the online 10 per cent sales tax for low value goods, that is goods valued below RM500,” Lim said in a statement.

On Monday, Teo said the overall national rollout is at 54.7 per cent, however for Penang it is slightly faster at 56.6 per cent.

She had also expressed hope that the 5G high-speed internet prices could be lowered with the expansion of its coverage.
