KUALA LUMPUR, March 2 — Amazon Web Services (AWS) will be investing RM25.5 billion in Malaysia by 2037, International Trade Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz announced today.
He said Malaysia attracted almost RM194 billion in investments from January to September last year.
"As we stand here today, AWS’ announcement of its first cloud computing infrastructure investment of RM25.5 billion in Malaysia reflects the country’s reputation as a preferred investment destination in the global tech scene,” he said.
He said that Malaysia is rapidly becoming known as a digital hub in Southeast Asia due to its highly developed information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure, large pool of tech talent, and the country’s robust intellectual property framework.
"And there is further good news in that our revised New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030) will seek to enhance all these advantages, and better position Malaysia as the gateway to Asia,” he added.
The NIMP 2030 will be unveiled in the third quarter of this year, he said.
Besides that, he added that AWS intends to have 80 per cent of its workforce here to be eventually made up of Malaysians.
"These investments are also important in creating spillover effects for our small and medium enterprises (SMEs), who can also become world-class by being part of the vendor ecosystem of multinationals like AWS,” he said.
Yesterday, the International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) announced that Tesla Motors will establish a head office here, together with Tesla Experience and Service centres as well as a supercharger network.

"Tesla’s presence in Malaysia is expected to create skilled and better paying job opportunities for workers in the BEV segment and increase the participation of local companies in the Tesla ecosystem both domestically and globally,” Miti said in a statement.
According to the statement, Tesla's entry has been facilitated by Miti through the introduction of the BEV Global Leaders initiative which is aimed at boosting BEV demand in the local market and further promoting the development of the entire ecosystem to support BEV adoption.
Tesla is the first application of this initiative by Miti.
