KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 19 — Local actress Ummi Nazeera Nurhidayah Zainul Abidin announced her resignation from the Muafakat Nasional (MN) non-governmental organisation (NGO) yesterday, following in the footsteps of popular singer Datuk Jamal Abdillah.
Her decision to withdraw as a member of MN will also see her resign from the Malay-Muslim NGO’s supreme council.
Malaysiakini reported that the 32-year-old, popularly known as Ummi Nazeera, said the decision was made after considering the public's concern about her involvement in politics.
"After taking into account the annoyance of Ummi's beloved fans as well as from interested parties, I, Ummi Nazeera, have decided to withdraw from MN.
"Ummi will continue to focus on working in the creative industry and also focus on Ummi's family," the news portal reported last night based on her Instagram post.
This comes after Jamal withdrew from MN due to the political world being incompatible with his principles as an entertainer.
Ummi Nazeera was reported to have joined MN and was appointed to the orgnisation’s supreme council three days ago.
However, her involvement in MN drew mixed reactions from various parties.
Last Thursday, MN president Tan Sri Annuar Musa announced that he had appointed individuals consisting of professionals, academics and influencers, to assist him with mobilising the NGO.
In addition to Ummi Nazeera and Jamal, several other artists, as well as celebrities, were announced to have joined MN, including Datuk Seri Eizlan Yusof.
Others include constitutional law expert Professor Shamrahayu A Aziz and Muslim convert preacher Mohd Ridhuan Tee Abdullah.
