ISKANDAR PUTERI, Dec 6 — Johor's Information Department, in collaboration with the state's Education Department, will be drafting a module to provide exposure to the importance and responsibility of voting among students following the lowering of the minimum voting age to 18.
Johor Education, Information and Communication Committee chairman Norlizah Noh said the state government will also form a smart collaboration with the Dato' Onn Institute (IDO) under the State Youth, Sports, Entrepreneur Development, Cooperatives and Human Resources Committee portfolio.
She said IDO's involvement is seen as important in the production of modules based on the experience that the institute has.
"At present, students in secondary schools are exposed to the parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy practice through the Malaysiaku Club in 73 schools throughout Johor.
"Among the strategies designed and compiled to make it easier for students is to understand the leadership process in our country through the election process,” she said.
At present, Norliza said with the cooperation of the election academy (Akademi Pilihan Raya), students are exposed to the process of how an election is conducted in addition to emphasising the importance of being a responsible voter.
"In addition to that, for this year the Johor Information Department has implemented a total of 20 brainstorming programmes and briefing sessions on current issues related to the Undi 18 initiative and the responsibilities of citizens at polytechnics, community colleges and Form Six colleges throughout Johor.
"Overall, this aims to provide exposure and information to students, especially those who are aged 18 and above regarding the voting age limit, the role and responsibility of citizens in the formation of the government and the democratic system in Malaysia," she said at the Johor state assembly in Bangunan Sultan Ismail here today.
